SEC 4 / SEC 5 (2022) SOCIAL STUDIES HEAD START PROGRAM

For all students who are moving on to Sec 4 and Sec 5 in 2022, and are struggling with your social studies, this is the Head Start course that will both intrigue you, and improve your grades tremendously at the same time!

THE INTENDED OUTCOMES OF THE SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE:

This four session programme will effectively guide and help students to appreciate and understand the demands of the wide SS syllabus, to be equipped with the core  answering skills for Source-Based Question (SBQ) items relating to Inference, Comparison, Usefulness, Reliability and Evaluation, and to tackle Structured Response Questions (SRQ) based on the Levels of Response Marking (LORMS). All these fundamentals will be clearly explained during the course to enable the students to gain confidence and interest in the subject. This course will sharpen the thinking skills of students as well as engage them in creative ways to analyse topics, questions and sources. Students who lack the confidence or the appropriate skills to meet the challenging, academic demands of Social Studies, will benefit from this course. This intensive programme will have the following objectives:

i) To set high expectations and to involve all students in varied skill-based learning activities to master the relevant skills;

ii) To establish positive routines that will enable students to work with consistency, and to boost students’ joy for learning.

iii) To reinforce the importance of the desired qualities for success such as being motivated, passionate, accountable, resilient and goal-driven.

iv) To provide creative ways to sustain students’ interest in learning, and to boost their confidence to make continuous improvement.

THE CORE ASPECTS OF THE COURSE

The course covers the following aspects which are generally in close alignment with MOE curriculum guidelines and assessment modes. Students will sit for a diagnostic assessment to look at the areas where help is needed. In addition to covering the core components such as the SBQ and SRQ answering skills based on the LORMS. Students will be given opportunities to analyse and apply the skills relating to the specific demands of the questions.  An important consideration is the importance of reading widely and being able to interact and exchange different points of views and to critically interpret different source materials.  Students will be exposed to various current and global issues and taught how to understand, analyse and evaluate the topics and issues. It is a great advantage for students to be well-read and well-informed of current affairs in order to better appreciate the subject.  A collation of sources from newspapers articles, magazines, pamphlets and brochures will be used to sharpen the thinking skills. Some sample assessment papers will also be provided to gauge the students’ mastery of the required skills. Overall, students will benefit from the authentic learning tasks and the engaging pedagogical methods of learning.

ABOUT THE TUTOR:

The Tutor is very experienced and is well versed with the MOE academic guidelines and expectations for the relevant subjects. His extensive experience in MOE schools, both at middle management level as well as in the instructional programmes, will certainly enable the students to gain confidence and valuable guidance, in addition to coping with the challenges they face in their academic areas. The students will greatly benefit from such soft skills like teamwork, the ability to communicate effectively, to think creatively, to build empathy, and to enhance their interpersonal skills. When students are motivated and inspired by caring and competent tutors,  they will be able to let their wings fly and soar. Learning effectively is, without a doubt, all about connecting with the students. It will be our ultimate success when each student can faithfully reiterate the following mantra: “My hunger for success is fuelled by my passion, attitude, curiosity and tenacity.”
