A-LEVEL PRIVATE CANDIDATES

FAQ

FAQ1:  If I’m a private candidate re-taking the A-Levels, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?

You only need to do GP and 3 H2 subjects. Total 4 subjects. You don’t need to redo your H1 content subject or PW or MT. For candidates who are re-takers, we recommend that you join our regular Jc2 Tuition classes as we will all be focused on preparing for our A-levels that year.

FAQ2:  If I’m a private candidate doing the A-Levels for the first time, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?

You’ll need to do 3 H2 subjects, 1 H1 content subject, GP and MT.  Total 6 subjects.

FAQ3:  If I’m a private candidate, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into an overseas university like in the UK or Australia?

Most overseas universities accept just 3 H2 subjects. Even GP is not needed. However some universities may expect a fourth subject, which can be a H1 or H2 subject, but it is safer to take a H2 subject.

We provide A-Level / H2 and O-Level Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Science (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) Practical Training for private / school candidates and homeschoolers, for both local (eg. H2, Singapore-Cambridge) and international exams (CIE, IGCSE). School candidates who need more FULL PRACTICAL PRACTICE are also welcome.

You may need science practical lessons if you are a private candidate who needs a science lab and apparatus as well as practical coaching, or you are a school candidate who needs more practical training or timed practice for a FULL PRACTICAL.

Retake O-Levels

RETAKING YOUR O-LEVELS? JOIN US.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES

The registration for ‘A’ and ‘O’ Level exams as a private candidate usually opens around mid-April (Please check SEAB website) and closes before mid-May. If you are registering for a Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Combined Sciences), at the time of registration, you will be asked whether you have done any science practical training in any school, centre, or institute. Thus you must begin your science practical training before April. Science practical training in Singapore Learner qualifies as practical training for the purpose of registration for Science subjects for the ‘A’ and ‘O’ level exams.

Thus if you are considering Singapore Learner as your science practical training provider, you must register with us and complete at least 4 basic practical sessions for each subject by 15th April for us to certify that you have attended science practical training. As students usually do about 10 practical sessions per subject to be competent in practicals, the rest of the lab sessions can be done from May to early October, including the prelim/mock practical exams.

For Practical courses, mock exams or schedules, please click on any of the following:

Note: Our practical fees are lowest for practicals done in the Jan-Mar period. So sign up now!

MOCK EXAMS FOR SCIENCE PRACTICAL (JUNE TO OCT)

CRASH COURSES (JUNE TO OCT):

H2 CHEMISTRY HANDS-ON PRACTICAL CRASH COURSE

H2 BIOLOGY HANDS-ON PRACTICAL CRASH COURSE

H2 PHYSICS HANDS-ON PRACTICAL CRASH COURSE

PAST TOPICS OF H2 PHYSICS PRACTICAL:

2022: Oscillation (slotted masses hanging from a string), W.E.P, Electricity (not potentiometer)

2023:

The first question (14m) was on circuits, construct a circuit with a wire-jockey potentiometer and a fixed resistor in parallel, then vary the fixed resistors (we were given 5 in total) while adjusting the length of the wire in contact with the jockey to keep the ammeter reading in the circuit constant.

The second question (8m) was on oscillations, where there was a short stick with two metal balls hanging from it by strings, and a diagonal stick crossing the strings which allowed the length of string to be varied and hence the period of oscillation.

The third question (22m) was on forces where students had to build a cantilever by hanging one edge of a meter rule off the table while the other edge remained on the table, and placing weights on it to find the balance point, then do calculations.

The planning question was on measuring background radioactivity count rate for different distances from a building and from the ground.

What you will get at each practical session:

(1) Teaching and instruction on how to use the various scientific tools and instruments.

(2) Tips on how to answer a practical worksheet or exam paper, including recording of observations, drawing graphs, writing conclusions, describing precautions and planning a practical.

(3) Notes on important aspects of science practicals.

We will also conduct Mock Practical Exams in September and October

MOE/SEAB SYLLABUS FOR H2 CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL

Paper 4 (Practical) is weighted to 20% of the Higher 2 assessment.

Candidates are expected to have been exposed to a range of topics and experimental techniques such as:

  1. Titration, e.g. acid-base titration (using suitable indicators such as methyl orange, screened methyl orange, thymolphthalein, and thymol blue), redox titration, iodimetric titration, indirect titration, including the preparation of standard solutions. Other types of titrations may also be required.
  2. Gravimetric analysis, e.g. volatilization gravimetry
  3. Gas collection
  4. Thermochemistry, including thermometric titration
  5. Chemical kinetics, e.g. continuous and initial rate methods
  6. Qualitative Inorganic analysis involving an element, a compound or a mixture. Systematic analysis will not be required. Candidates should be familiar with the reactions of cations, anions, and tests of gases as detailed in the Qualitative Analysis Notes. Reactions involving ions not included in the QA notes may be tested: in such cases, candidates will not be expected to identify the ions but only to draw conclusions of a general nature. Candidates should not attempt tests, other than those specified, on substances, except when it is appropriate to test for a gas.
  7. Qualitative inorganic analysis requiring a knowledge of simple organic reactions e.g. test-tube reactions indicating the presence of unsaturation ( C = C), alcoholic, phenolic, carbonyl, carboxyl and amino groups, may be tested, but this would be for the testing of observation skills and drawing general conclusions only
  8. Simple organic synthesis and purification, including use of water bath, setting up and the use of reflux and distillation apparatus

Retaking A-Levels for Private Candidates

This is a 10-month programme. Ideally you should enrol in January as the A-Levels is a rigorous exam.

Subjects currently offered: H2 Math, H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry, H2 Economics, H1 General paper.

Note that if you are a private candidate re-taking the A-Levels, to get into a local university like NUS or NTU, you will only need to do GP and 3 H2 subjects. Total 4 subjects. You don’t need to redo your H1 content subject or PW or MT.

Although you will need to do 4 subjects at the A-Levels, at Singapore Learner Academy, you can choose to sign up for less than 4 subjects if you feel that you can study the remaining subjects by yourself.

Fee Matters:

The fee per month for each subject is $480. Fees are due in the first week of each month.

One-time Registration Fee for each student is $20.

Materials fee per non-science subject is $90 while that for a science subject is $150, for the whole course.

A Deposit equivalent to one-month’s fee is payable upon registration. (This Deposit will be used as fee for October)

Total fee in a normal month = $480 x (number of subjects)

Parents/students will be also be informed of any books which need to be purchased. Students are also expected to have their own writing materials and calculator.

Administrative and Operational Matters:

Education days: Mon, Tue, Thur, and Fri and weekends (for practicals), except public holidays and some government school holidays. Students need to come only on days for which they have official lessons.

Education hours: 10.30 am – 12.30 pm, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm or 8.00 pm – 10.00 pm (Not all these sessions will be utilized in a single day).

Education calendar: In terms of weeks, terms, months and semester of study as well as no-lesson days, SLA generally follows the same academic calendar as those of government secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore, so that families and staff with children in public secondary schools can better align their social activities. However, graduating students may be asked to attend extra lessons or take internal examinations in the June holidays.
