A-LEVEL PRIVATE CANDIDATES

FAQ

FAQ1:  If I’m a private candidate re-taking the A-Levels, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?

You only need to do GP and 3 H2 subjects. Total 4 subjects. You don’t need to redo your H1 content subject or PW or MT. For candidates who are re-takers, we recommend that you join our regular Jc2 Tuition classes as we will all be focused on preparing for our A-levels that year.

FAQ2:  If I’m a private candidate doing the A-Levels for the first time, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?

You’ll need to do 3 H2 subjects, 1 H1 content subject, GP and MT.  Total 6 subjects.

FAQ3:  If I’m a private candidate, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into an overseas university like in the UK or Australia?

Most overseas universities accept just 3 H2 subjects. Even GP is not needed. However some universities may expect a fourth subject, which can be a H1 or H2 subject, but it is safer to take a H2 subject.

We provide A-Level / H2 and O-Level Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Science (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) Practical Training for private / school candidates and homeschoolers, for both local (eg. H2, Singapore-Cambridge) and international exams (CIE, IGCSE). School candidates who need more FULL PRACTICAL PRACTICE are also welcome.

You may need science practical lessons if you are a private candidate who needs a science lab and apparatus as well as practical coaching, or you are a school candidate who needs more practical training or timed practice for a FULL PRACTICAL.

RETAKING YOUR O-LEVELS? JOIN US.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES

The registration for ‘A’ and ‘O’ Level exams as a private candidate usually opens around mid-April (Please check SEAB website) and closes before mid-May. If you are registering for a Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Combined Sciences), at the time of registration, you will be asked whether you have done any science practical training in any school, centre, or institute. Thus you must begin your science practical training before April. Science practical training in Singapore Learner qualifies as practical training for the purpose of registration for Science subjects for the ‘A’ and ‘O’ level exams.

Thus if you are considering Singapore Learner as your science practical training provider, you must register with us and complete at least 4 basic practical sessions for each subject by 15th April for us to certify that you have attended science practical training. As students usually do about 10 practical sessions per subject to be competent in practicals, the rest of the lab sessions can be done from May to early October, including the prelim/mock practical exams.

Note:  For training purposes, Pure and Combined Science students attend the same practical sessions as the syllabus for practicals is the same for both. The only difference between the two kinds of practicals is there are no Planning questions for Combined Science students.

Retaking O-Levels for Private Candidates

You can choose to do ANY number of subjects.

 Fees are paid MONTHLY.

Other than Combined Science, we also offer Pure Science.

 Availability of Science Practical Sessions.

Low class size of up to 9 students only.

We are at Bukit Batok and Tampines.

O-LEVEL PREPARATION PROGRAMME

This is a 10-month programme equivalent to Sec 4 or Sec 5, with revision of Sec 3 work. Ideally you should enrol in January. If you can start in January, please do so as the O-Levels is a fairly rigorous exam.

Main academic subjects offered:  English, Math, A.Math, Science (Physics, Chemistry), Science (Biology, Chemistry), Physics, Chemistry, Biology.

In SLA, you can take even just one subject if you wish. But please take note of the following:

Please note that students who intend to proceed to a Polytechnic must offer English (at least a C6 for most courses), Math (at least a C6), and 3 other subjects, for a total of 5 subjects. Thus students who do less than 5 subjects in SLA need to study their remaining subjects on their own if they intend to apply to a polytechnic.

Students who intend to proceed to a Junior College must offer English (at least a C6), Math (at least a D7), and 4 other subjects, for a total of 6 subjects, and must have passed Mother Tongue (at least a D7). Thus students who do less than 6 subjects in SLA need to study their remaining subjects on their own if they intend to apply to a JC.

Fee Matters:

The fee per month for each subject is $160.

Fees are due in the first week of each month.

One-time Registration Fee for each student is $20 (non-refundable).

Deposit for each subject = 1 month’s fee of each subject (refundable).

Materials fee (photocopying, notes, graph paper etc) per NON-SCIENCE subject is $90 (non-refundable) for the whole academic year.

Materials fee (photocopying, notes, graph paper, science lab consumables etc) per PURE SCIENCE subject is $290 (non-refundable) for the whole academic year.

Materials fee (photocopying, notes, graph paper, science lab consumables etc) for COMBINED SCIENCE is $490 (non-refundable) for the whole academic year.

Total Fee payable at point of Registration: [$20] + [$90 x (number of Non-Science subjects)] + [$290 x (number of Pure Science subjects)]+ [$490 (if Combined Science taken)] + [$160 x (number of subjects) x 2 (deposit)].

Total fee for each remaining month = $160 x (number of subjects)

Parents/students will be also be informed of any books which need to be purchased. Students are also expected to have their own writing materials and calculator.

Administrative and Operational Matters:

Education days: Mon, Tue, Thur, and Fri and weekends (for practicals), except public holidays and some government school holidays. Students need to come only on days for which they have official lessons.

Education hours: Depending on availability, you can choose to attend classes in the mornings or evenings: 10.45 am – 1.45 pm, or 7.30 pm – 10.30 pm (Not all these sessions will be utilized in a single day).

Education calendar: In terms of weeks, terms, months and semester of study as well as no-lesson days, SLA generally follows the same academic calendar as those of government secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore, so that families and staff with children in public secondary schools can better align their social activities. However, graduating students may be asked to attend extra lessons or take internal examinations in the June holidays.

Registration:

Registration is now open for the 2019 intake. Classes will officially commence on Monday 4 Feb 2019. However, students who are taking the O-Levels for the first time are required to start classes in the first week of Jan 2019. To register, please visit Singapore Learner to fill up a registration form and to make the necessary payments.

Our administrative opening hours: Weekdays: 11 am to 8 pm | Saturdays 10 am to 3 pm.

If you need to discuss with us on any of the above matters, please book an appointment with us by sending a message to 9786 0411. Thank you!
