The challenges of IP education are open ended. It is tough to find the right assessment books for extra practice questions, the right textbooks for reference, or even the right advice to follow. Tuition classes also typically cater to the mainstream students, and IP students may feel neglected in such classes due to the differences in Syllabus or mentality. The pace in IP schools is accelerated, due to the fact that most of the students excel in Mathematics and Sciences at the P6 level, and are all top students of their individual Primary Schools. In such a highly competitive environment with students who are years ahead of the mainstream syllabus, olympiad medalists, or foreign scholars, they will experience difficulty in recovering, and even feel demoralized as their friends move ahead of them daily.

The IP system is designed to nurture critical thinkers, self directed learners, as well as all rounded students, which is a test of time management. Therefore, the schools expects their students to uphold a strict level of discipline, as well as actively seek solutions to the questions they give, be it in project work, in assignment questions, or in leadership positions for various CCAs. There is no official guideline or guidebook that is found in the market such as the 10year series. IP questions are often derived from JC level tutorial questions or even higher, which can cause some problems when parents seek help from a tutor who is preoccupied with students of various different streams. The curriculum is also dynamic, changing in a 2 year cycle, with the inclusion of creative higher order thinking questions that even teachers or university graduates find puzzling.

What we prioritize in class is a nimble and dynamic curriculum tailored to suit their needs. Questions are scaffolded to help them build content mastery (Assessment objective 1) quickly, and move on to questions dealing with critical thinking (Assessment objective 2 & 3) to handle their school’s papers.

We understand that students from different schools might have slightly different syllabuses. With that in mind, our classes are designed with small groups in mind to facilitate consultation and ensure that each student gets the help they need, prioritizing immediate feedback, and students being able to movie at their own pace. As there are already many sources of knowledge widely available from school, commercially or online, such as lecture notes, cheat sheets and even videos, our focus is on METACOGNITIVE THINKING SKILLS. An IP student must not just have knowledge and thinking skills; to stay ahead of his peers, he must also possess efficient study skills and metacognitive awareness of what he has learnt.

IP Science Practicals:

The importance of IP practicals will be in two areas.

  1. To prepare students for the rigor of H2 and higher level Sciences at the A-level standard. The IP system ends at Y6 where the students have to take A-level, for paper 4 of the A-level Sciences, students will be assessed on their ability to confidently set up experiments, record data, troubleshoot devices, and analyze their readings. Paper 4 is 20% of the final grade for A-levels. Due to time constraint, IP schools may deprioritize full lab sessions which can take up to 2.5h, making students under prepared for A-levels. Practical sessions for IP are strongly recommended to give the students enough lead time and get in that muscle memory in order to have a perfect score for their A-level Sciences paper 4. Even if in Y1-Y4, practical is only part of a formative assessment, an exposure to practical periodically will significantly enhance the student’s understanding of Science and eventually prepare them to do well for A-levels.
  2. As dynamic and holistic as the IP curriculum is, with the use of graded projects acting as formative assessment, there is a way to ensure you get an A grade. The curriculum is an enhancement for the secondary school syllabus set by the curriculum planning & development division for MOE, and with that in mind, its likely that the projects rely heavily on competency in conducting practical. Having familiarity with the tools given in secondary level sciences will help the IP students in confidently completing their science projects in a timely and orderly fashion, getting that A, and getting back on track for their written theory components.

With that being said, we are the ONLY centre with a fully equipped lab running from 9am-9pm every single day, with tutors fully equipped to teach practical to a high level of both precision and accuracy. Bookings can be done on an adhoc basis, REGARDLESS OF CLASS SIZE, which is something that no other centre can offer. Current IP students with Singapore learner can receive up to 50% discount for practicals and get assigned priority timings. Drop us a text to inquire more.

THE TUTORS

Mr Seah: Mr Seah graduated from NUS with a BSc (Honours) with a Major in Chemistry and a Minor in Biology. A good and caring tutor, he has been conducting theory and practical lessons for students in both Chemistry and Biology. He is a passionate educator who believes in making lessons digestible, as well as in simplifying the topics for learners by using various teaching methods. Any learner under him will be trained to be sharp thinkers and excellent “answerers” for exam questions.

Ms Tang: Ms Tang graduated from NTU with a B.Eng in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She has been teaching students in O level and IP Chemistry, Physics and Biology, as well as International school students in IGCSE and IB Math and Sciences since 2009. An effective and caring tutor, she uses analogies and diagrams to explain and classify things for easier memorization; identifying and correcting students’ misconceptions and assumptions, understanding what students are confused about, and helping them to see where they have gone wrong. Ms Tang has helped many students achieve their desired results.

Mr Ilyas:  An NIE-trained Teacher, Mr Ilyas has been coaching students in IP Chemistry, IP Physics and IP Math for more than 10 years. An alumnus of Raffles Institution, Mr Ilyas holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the NUS as well as a Master of Education (Curriculum & Teaching) degree from the National Institute of Education. Mr Ilyas’ thinking and metacognitive approaches to problem solving has helped many students of varying abilities to excel in Math and the Sciences. He has coached students from many different schools and streams, including IP, SAP, and IB.
