O-LEVEL SCIENCE (BIOLOGY) PRACTICAL

We provide A-Level / H2 and O-Level Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Science (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) Practical training for private / school candidates and homeschoolers, for both local (eg. H2, Singapore-Cambridge) and international exams (CIE, IGCSE). School candidates are also welcome.

MOE/SEAB SYLLABUS FOR O-LEVEL SCIENCE BIOLOGY PRACTICAL

Paper 3 (Practical) is weighted to 15% of the assessment.

  1. The practical examination is designed to test candidates’ abilities to:

(a) follow carefully a sequence of instructions within a set time allowance
(b) use familiar and unfamiliar techniques to record their observations and make deductions from them
(c) employ manipulative skills in assembling apparatus, in using chemical reagents and in using such instruments as mounted needles, scalpels and razor blades, forceps and scissors
(d) observe reactions, read simple measuring instruments and perform simple arithmetical calculations
(e) recognise and observe features of familiar and unfamiliar biological specimens, record their observations and make deductions about functions of whole specimens or their parts
(f) make clear line drawings of the specimens provided, indicate magnification and to label familiar structures
(g) interpret unfamiliar data and draw conclusions from their interpretations
(h) measure to an accuracy of 1 mm, using a ruler.
(i) comment on a procedure used in an experiment and suggest an improvement
(j) design / plan an investigation to solve a problem

  1. Candidates may be asked to carry out simple physiological experiments, involving tests for food substances (specifically reducing sugars with Benedict’s solution, starch using iodine solution, protein
using the biuret test and fats using the ethanol emulsion test), enzyme reactions, hydrogen carbonate indicator solution, cobalt(II) chloride paper etc. It is expected that glassware and instruments normally
found in a laboratory (e.g. beakers, test-tube racks, funnels, thermometers, droppers and so on) should be available for these experiments.

  2. Candidates may be asked to carry out simple physiological experiments, involving the use of the above mentioned instruments 1(h) on plant or animal materials. Accurate observations of these specimens will need a hand lens of not less than ×6 magnification for each candidate.

  3. The material set will be closely related to the subject matter of the syllabus, but will not necessarily be limited to the particular types mentioned therein. In order to assist their own practical work, and to supply possible examination specimens, schools are asked to build up a reference collection of material.

  4. When planning practical work, teachers should make sure that they do not contravene any school, education authority, or government regulations which restrict the sampling, in educational establishments, of urine, saliva, blood or other bodily secretions and tissues.

OUR STRUCTURED PRACTICAL TRAINING SYSTEM

Based on the above syllabus, we have several structured programs for you, depending on whether you are a private or school candidate.

PRIVATE CANDIDATES

If you are a private candidate, for each subject, you must complete 4 Basic practicals (preferably by 15 Apr) plus a further 2 Exam-Paper-Style practicals, before we issue you a certificate to acknowledge that you have completed a sufficient amount of practical training necessary for your actual exam. Beyond these 6 practical sessions, you may also opt to attend our Practical Crash Courses and our Practical Mock Exams in June, September or October.

SCHOOL CANDIDATES

If you are a current school candidate, you may select any of the training labs found in our schedule, and you are strongly encouraged to sign up early for our Practical Crash Courses and our Practical Mock Exams which will be held in June, September or October.

OUR SCIENCE (BIOLOGY) PRACTICAL SCHEDULE (Jan to Oct)

*Other labs, such as PB11-PB12, are also available for those who want further training or as mock exams.

PRACTICAL TUITION FEES

PRACTICAL DAYS AND TIMINGS

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE:

The above is the ideal schedule for students who want to excel in their Biology practical exams, by starting in Jan and having a final practical revision or mock exam in Oct. The practical sessions are well spread out, giving students time to study the theory components as well as other subjects. Thus it is highly recommended that you commence your practical training in January.

* If instead you are looking for a COMPLETE Science O-Level Prep program (Theory + Practical), then join our SCIENCE ACADEMY.

HOW TO BOOK A LAB SESSION:

(1) Decide which Program or Lab sessions you need or most suitable for.

(2) Whatsapp or Message our staff at 88765498 with your Name, Private or School Candidate, A or O level, Subject or Lab Name (e.g Lab PP2), Date and Time of Lab. (Our staff will then guide you on how to register and make payment. If you are not sure about the lab sessions, just state your Name and the Subjects and we will get back to you)

(3) Register Online by clicking below:

(4) Pay Registration fee of $50 via Paynow or funds transfer.

(5) Make the required payment for each lab session at least 7 days before the date of the lab session. (You may also pay for several sessions at one go to ensure that you will have a place in future slots)
