SEC 3 – 4 BIOLOGY PRACTICALS

This page is for students who will be doing our 2-year Science Practical Programme, from Sec 3 to Sec 4, typically for homeschoolers or students who have left secondary school at Sec 2.

HOW TO BOOK A LAB SESSION:

(1) Decide which Program or Lab sessions you need or most suitable for, by visiting the webpages of the practical subjects you are interested in (if you can’t find the labs you need, Whatapps us at 88765498). http://wa.link/w0xxk2

(2) Whatsapp or Message our staff at 88765498 with your Name, Private or School Candidate, A or O level, Subject or Lab Name (e.g Lab PP2), Date and Time of Lab. (Our staff will then guide you on how to register and make payment. If you are not sure about the lab sessions, just state your Name and the Subjects and we will get back to you)

(3) Register Online by clicking below:

(4) Pay Registration fee of $30 via Paynow or funds transfer.

(5) Make the required payment for each lab session at least 5 days before the date of the lab session. (You may also pay for several sessions at one go to ensure that you will have a place in future slot)

FEES PER SESSION

Practical Training Session: $140

IMPORTANT : The full fee must be paid at least 5 days before the practical session to confirm your attendance as a lot of preparation is needed for practicals coupled with very limited class size. PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE ABSENT FOR A LAB SESSION, A PENALTY OF $50 MUST BE PAID TO POSTPONE THIS LAB TO ANOTHER SESSION, AND ONLY 1 POSTPONEMENT IS ALLOWED FOR EACH LAB, ELSE THE LAB IS CONSIDERED COMPLETED AND PAID FOR, AND NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN. THE FEE FOR THE MISSED LAB CANNOT BE USED FOR ANOTHER LAB.

MOE/SEAB SYLLABUS FOR O-LEVEL BIOLOGY PRACTICAL

Paper 3 (Practical) is weighted to 20% of the assessment.

Candidates are expected to have been exposed to a range of topics and experimental techniques such as:

  1. Simple physiological experiments, involving tests for food substances, enzyme reactions, hydrogencarbonate indicator solution, cobalt(II) chloride paper and so on
  2. Simple physiological experiments, involving the use of sharp instruments on plant or animal materials (accurate observations of these specimens will need a hand lens of not less than X 6
    magnification for each candidate)
  3. Manipulative skills in assembling apparatus, in using chemical reagents and in using such instruments as mounted needles, scalpels and razor blades, forceps and scissors
  4. Measurements using appropriate instruments (e.g. thermometer, syringe, measuring cylinder, ruler and so on) and simple arithmetical calculations
  5. Familiar and unfamiliar techniques to record observations and make deductions from them
  6. Recognition and observation of features of familiar and unfamiliar biological specimens, recording observations and making deductions about functions of whole specimens or their parts
  7. Clear line drawings of the specimens provided, indicating magnification and labelling familiar structures
This is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Candidates are expected to be familiar with the use of data-loggers.

Based on the above syllabus, we have selected several lab topics which students need to complete to achieve the above practical exam objectives.

Note:  For training purposes, Pure and Combined Science students attend the same practical sessions as the syllabus for practicals is the same for both. The only difference between the two kinds of practicals is there are no Planning questions for Combined Science students.
