Reflections on PSLE Math Intensive Revision recently held at Concept Learning

I’ve been wanting to write abt this for some time. For the four days of the PSLE Math Intensive Revision we covered topics such as Remainder Concept, Constant Difference Concept, Internal Transfer Concept and so on, with each worksheet having questions of increasing difficulty involving whole numbers, decimals, fractions, ratios and percentages. For most of the questions, I showed more than one method of solving them, for eg., by using model drawings, units, or the branch method and so on.

So what did I discover from conducting the course? I’m surprised to learn from the students that schools do not cover all the methods I demonstrated, maybe due to a lack of time. And the students, who were abt medium to high ability in math, could solve difficult questions if the question involves only one concept or one method. If the question involves fractions, ratios, decimals and percentages all at the same time, or the question is best done using the branch method first followed by models drawing, then many of the students could not completely solve the problem.

How to overcome the above problem? Students need to understand that fractions, ratios, decimals and percentages all just different forms of the same proportion of quantities, and are thus easily convertible from one form to the other. But students must first understand each concept properly first; for example, what does it mean if the problem has the phrase “John has 25% percent more marbles than Alvin”? If a student is comfortable with using the ratio method to solve problems, but is unable to rewrite the above phrase in ratio form, then he may not be able to proceed with solving the rest of the problem.

Some questions involve more than one concept. For example, it contains a phrase such as “Alvin sold some marbles and gave 40% of the remainder to Susan and Eugene, with Susan getting 20 more marbles than Eugene.” A well-trained student would be able to use a number of methods to solve a difficult problem.

I’m also surprised that some students do not know how to check whether their answers are correct. Since most tough questions require students to work backwards to find some unknown starting quantity, then the student can verify the correctness of his answer by working “forward” with the now known starting quantity and try to obtain all the other quantities given in the question.

The key to solving PSLE math problems is to understand that either a quantity has remained unchanged, or is equal to another, or can be made equal to another. Then the different methods (models, units, branch etc) can be applied.

A very bright student once said to me – “Whether you draw models or use units or use algebra is not important. You must first understand the nature of the problem.”

Good luck.

Ilyasa.

* If you are medium or high ability student preparing for PSLE Math, you may want to attend my weekly workshop: Challenging PSLE Math Programme for Medium to High Ability Students. In this programme, I will also include P6 Math Olympiad problems that are relevant to the PSLE.

Mr Chong: Mr Chong graduated from Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School with an impressive PSLE score of 265 (Top 2% nationwide), achieving straight A/A* grades. He went on to Hwa Chong Institution, where he was a Bilingual Triple Science Scholar, before pursuing his studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Faculty of Science. A passionate and dedicated educator, Mr Chong specialises in Mathematics and the Triple Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). Having experienced both the Integrated Programme (IP) and O-Level pathways, he is well-equipped to guide students from either stream with clarity and precision. Known for his tech-savvy teaching style, Mr Chong integrates modern tools and digital learning techniques to make lessons engaging and effective.

Ms Tang: Ms Tang graduated from NTU with a B.Eng in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She has been teaching students in PSLE Math and Science since 2009. An effective and caring tutor, she uses analogies and diagrams to explain and classify things for easier memorization; identifying and correcting students’ misconceptions and assumptions, understanding what students are confused about, and helping them to see where they have gone wrong. Ms Tang has helped many students achieve their desired results.

Mr Ilyas:  An NIE-trained Teacher, Mr Ilyas has been coaching students in O-Level & IP Chemistry, Physics and Math for more than 12 years. An alumnus of Raffles Institution, Mr Ilyas holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the NUS as well as a Master of Education (Curriculum & Teaching) degree from the National Institute of Education. Mr Ilyas’ thinking and metacognitive approaches to problem solving has helped many students of varying abilities to excel in Math and the Sciences. He has coached students from many different schools and streams, including IP, SAP, and IB.

“Models (drawing of) destroyed my life.” – Sec 3 Math student

I laughed when he said it. But it’s a significant statement by my Sec 3 Math student made two days ago. It’s something I’ve been warning parents and students about, in my earlier article Beware the Critical Years in Math.

This Sec 3 Math tutee is from a top government secondary school in the west. Being mathematically intelligent, he had found it easy to use models-drawing to solve PSLE Math problems. But he had a hard time coping with Algebra in Sec 1 and Sec 2, and it’s affecting both his Math and A. Math performance now. This situation is not unique to him.

The best years of learning by your brain is probably from the time you were born to just before your teenagehood. Singaporeans around my age or older were taught to use algebraic equations to solve math problems at the PSLE back then. I remember using simultaneous equations in 1984 to solve today’s “guess & check” problems in the PSLE. Thus our algebraic skills were good and it helped us, even those who didn’t do well at the PSLE, in doing O-Level and A-Level Math.

Algebra is SO important for Math at O-level and A-level, yet our dear MOE chooses not to introduce it for problem-solving in today’s PSLE. I still don’t understand why.

It is true that some young students may not be able to understand Algebra, due to it being very abstract. But it is also true that some young students are not visually or spatially intelligent enough to draw, cut and move rectangles to solve problems. For eg, what has rectangles got to do with mass or age? (you know, those problems involving age relationships between persons or mass relationships between objects). Using rectangles or boxes to represent age or mass is just as ridiculous or abstract as using letters such as ‘x’ and ‘y’ as in algebra.

The least the MOE should do is to allow the teaching of BOTH methods to solve problems. Since those boxes start appearing in P2 or P3, algebraic expressions should also be introduced at P2 or P3, algebraic expansion in P4, algebraic factorisation in P5, and algebraic equations in P6. Sec 1 students can straightaway start on algebraic fractions etc. Do we lose anything by introducing algebra earlier in our math curriculum?

I’m glad I started my Sec 1 Algebra course for post-PSLE students in Nov and Dec last year (see Sec 1 Algebra Headstart Holiday Enrichment Programme for post-PSLE students). I think students still don’t realise how ill-prepared they are for math in sec school and JC. I dare say that if you are weak in your S1 and S2 algebra, you don’t have to take Math anymore.

Good Luck.

Rgds,

Ilyasa
