HANDS-ON H2 CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL REVISION
MOE/SEAB SYLLABUS FOR H2 CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL
Paper 4 (Practical) is weighted to 20% of the Higher 2 assessment.
Candidates are expected to have been exposed to a range of topics and experimental techniques such as:
- Titration, e.g. acid-base titration (using suitable indicators such as methyl orange, screened methyl orange, thymolphthalein, and thymol blue), redox titration, iodimetric titration, indirect titration, including the preparation of standard solutions. Other types of titrations may also be required.
- Gravimetric analysis, e.g. volatilization gravimetry
- Gas collection
- Thermochemistry, including thermometric titration
- Chemical kinetics, e.g. continuous and initial rate methods
- Qualitative Inorganic analysis involving an element, a compound or a mixture. Systematic analysis will not be required. Candidates should be familiar with the reactions of cations, anions, and tests of gases as detailed in the Qualitative Analysis Notes. Reactions involving ions not included in the QA notes may be tested: in such cases, candidates will not be expected to identify the ions but only to draw conclusions of a general nature. Candidates should not attempt tests, other than those specified, on substances, except when it is appropriate to test for a gas.
- Qualitative inorganic analysis requiring a knowledge of simple organic reactions e.g. test-tube reactions indicating the presence of unsaturation ( C = C), alcoholic, phenolic, carbonyl, carboxyl and amino groups, may be tested, but this would be for the testing of observation skills and drawing general conclusions only
- Simple organic synthesis and purification, including use of water bath, setting up and the use of reflux and distillation apparatus

SEC 3 COMBINED SCIENCE (BUKIT BATOK)
We have 2 modes of regular weekly tuition for our Math and Science classes (non-IP): Flexible Group Tuition and 1-1 Tuition.
FLEXIBLE GROUP TUITION (FGT)
We do not have a fixed group tuition slot for secondary school students for three important reasons: (1) secondary students tend to have all sorts of after-school activities and even weekend school activities such that they will keep asking for change of tuition timing and many make-up lessons, thus if we accommodate this it will become flexible group tuition anyway; (2) secondary students have several math and science subjects and either multiple tuition will be too expensive for them or they will ask both math and science questions during tuition time as our kind and caring tutors can teach both math and science subjects; (3) different schools proceed with the same subject at a different pace and even with a different order of topics thus many secondary students will find tuition lessons are not relevant to them if we dedicate a specific topic of a particular subject to a tuition slot.
So in Flexible Group Tuition, a one-session-per-week student can attend any ONE of the designated slots and times and can consult the tutor on any math or science topic. The student is still advised to stick to one slot where possible for ease of administration. The schedule and structure of FGT is as follows:
Days: Mon, Tue, Fri, Sat, Sun
Times: 5.30pm – 7pm
Structure: Once a week, 4 times a month (however, a student may opt for the twice-a-week scheme with a higher but discounted monthly fee)
Registration fee: $30
Monthly fee (4 sessions, start in Nov-Jan): $280 (once-a-week) | $480 (twice-a-week)
Monthly fee (4 sessions, start in Feb-Oct): $320 (once-a-week) | $560 (twice-a-week)
Note: Above fees for new students may be changed without notice. In general, our fees are lowest for those who commence tuition in Nov-Jan and will increase after that (for new students).
1-1 TUITION
Days: To be negotiated and agreed upon
Times: To be negotiated and agreed upon
Registration fee: $30
For further details, click on INDIVIDUAL TUITION.
Note: Our Science students (who commence tuition before March) enjoy a 50% discount when they book our Science practical sessions (once a month).
SCIENCE PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR ‘O’ AND ‘A’ LEVEL (Jan to Oct)
The Tutor for our Math and Science programs is a former MOE school teacher (ex-Rafflesian) who has been coaching students in Physics, Chemistry, Math and A.Math for more than 10 years. An alumnus of RI and RJC, he also holds both a Master of Education degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education with Credit from the National Institute of Education (NIE), as well as a Bachelor of Science degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

MOCK EXAMS FOR SCIENCE PRACTICAL (JUNE TO OCT)
CRASH COURSES (JUNE TO OCT):
H2 CHEMISTRY HANDS-ON PRACTICAL CRASH COURSE
H2 BIOLOGY HANDS-ON PRACTICAL CRASH COURSE
H2 PHYSICS HANDS-ON PRACTICAL CRASH COURSE
PAST TOPICS OF H2 PHYSICS PRACTICAL:
2022: Oscillation (slotted masses hanging from a string), W.E.P, Electricity (not potentiometer)
2023:
The first question (14m) was on circuits, construct a circuit with a wire-jockey potentiometer and a fixed resistor in parallel, then vary the fixed resistors (we were given 5 in total) while adjusting the length of the wire in contact with the jockey to keep the ammeter reading in the circuit constant.
The second question (8m) was on oscillations, where there was a short stick with two metal balls hanging from it by strings, and a diagonal stick crossing the strings which allowed the length of string to be varied and hence the period of oscillation.
The third question (22m) was on forces where students had to build a cantilever by hanging one edge of a meter rule off the table while the other edge remained on the table, and placing weights on it to find the balance point, then do calculations.
The planning question was on measuring background radioactivity count rate for different distances from a building and from the ground.
What you will get at each practical session:
(1) Teaching and instruction on how to use the various scientific tools and instruments.
(2) Tips on how to answer a practical worksheet or exam paper, including recording of observations, drawing graphs, writing conclusions, describing precautions and planning a practical.
(3) Notes on important aspects of science practicals.

CIE A-LEVEL CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL
We provide A-Level / H2 and O-Level Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Science (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) Practical training for private / school candidates and homeschoolers, for both local (eg. H2, Singapore-Cambridge) and international exams (CIE, IGCSE). School candidates are also welcome.
CIE SYLLABUS FOR CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL
Paper 3 (Practical) is weighted to 23% of the total CIE AS Level assessment.
One question will be an observational problem in which the candidate will be asked to investigate an unknown substance or substances by specified experiments. The substances may be elements, compounds or mixtures. Candidates will be expected to record their observations, analyse their results and draw appropriate conclusions.
The other question or questions will be quantitative: either volumetric analysis or measurement of a quantity, e.g. the enthalpy change of a reaction, mass change on heating, changing the rate of a reaction or measuring a gas volume. Candidates will be expected to draw suitable tables, graphs and other appropriate means of presenting the data. They will analyse the data, perform calculations and draw appropriate conclusions from them.
One or more of the questions may require candidates to comment on the accuracy of the procedure or identify sources of error and make suggestions for change.
Candidates should be able to:
• set up apparatus
• follow instructions given in the form of written instructions or diagrams
• use their apparatus to collect an appropriate quantity of data or observations, including subtle differences in colour, solubility or quantity of materials
• make measurements using pipettes, burettes, measuring cylinders, thermometers and other common laboratory apparatus.
It will be assumed that candidates will be familiar with the following qualitative analysis reactions
(i) the reactions of the following cations: NH4 + , Mg2+, Al 3+, Ca2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Ba2+
(ii) the reactions of the following anions: CO3 2–, NO3 – , NO2 – , SO4 2–, SO3 2–, Cl – , Br– , I –
(iii) tests for the following gases: NH3, CO2, Cl 2, H2, O2.
In qualitative experiments, precise descriptions and comparisons of colour or other observations are expected. In a titration with a good end-point, candidates are expected to record two titres within 0.10cm3 .
You can book (at least 7 days in advance) any of the following slots for your science practical training:
