It is common knowledge that that Sec 1 Math is VERY DIFFERENT from PSLE Math, such that students who excel in PSLE Math can still do badly in Math at Sec 1. The KEY to mastering Sec 1 Math is to understand fully how to deal with NEGATIVE NUMBERS as well as ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS. This course will EQUIP students with the necessary skills to MASTER Sec 1 Math.

Reflection on S1 IP Physics class
Today is the first day of our Sec 1 Physics class. I’ve been teaching JC and Sec 4 Physics for 10 years but have never thought of teaching S1 Physics until late last year. Last Nov I decided to have a Fast-Track Physics class in 2015 for interested S1 students especially those from IP schools, as their Physics in S1 normally includes concepts from S3.
Today we covered Physical Quantities, SI units, base quantities, prefixes, standard form and conversion of units. Terms taught included magnitude, direction, scalars and vectors.
Of the above, students found conversion of units and standard form to be the most difficult. This is because fractions, decimals and indices are involved. This is why I insist on teaching indices in my post-PSLE S1 Math Headstart classes. Many Physics students in S3 and S4 still find conversion of units difficult even though it is taught in S1 as well as in math.
Nevertheless, the S1 students enjoyed the class as they could see how math was applied to solve science problems. Next week we will be learning about how to measure lengths more accurately using vernier calipers.

Sec 1 Posting Exercise 2014-2015
My daughter will get her posting tomorrow. I hope she gets her first choice school as it is the nearest good school to our home. If she does, all three daughters will be in different schools for the first time in our family. Thus in 2015, I may end up driving to 4 different schools in the morning, as my wife is teaching in a school which our children are not old enough to attend.
I would like to wish all the best to all who will be receiving their Sec 1 posting tomorrow. If you get the school you want, good for you. If you don’t, stop being sad and get on with life. Sec 1 is just the beginning of yet another long journey. It is more important that you are prepared for Sec 1 than getting the school that you or your parents want. Remember, the end is more important than the beginning. Which ever school you start with, you will still end up taking the same A-levels, IB exams or the SAT. You can do well in whichever school you go to if you work smart and stay focused.

Tutor’s comments:
The students took quite some time to understand the concept of negative numbers as it is not covered at all in the primary math syllabus. They were intrigued by the techniques of adding, subtracting, multiplying and adding negative numbers, and using BODMAS (Order of Operations) to evaluate an expression that is a mixture of these. Things became more difficult when fractions came in, but simplifying algebraic expressions become much easier when students have mastered arithmetic involving negative numbers and brackets as well as powers or indices.

Under this scheme, students do not need to register with our centre. If a student needs clarification on a particular topic in E.Math, A.Math, Physics or Chemistry, or needs help solving some questions in these subjects, he can just message the tutor (hp: 97860411, NUS grad, NIE-trained, Ex-RI) to book a 1-hr slot. Fee is $90 per hour and must be paid in advance to confirm the slot (no refund for a no-show whatever the reason). Lessons can be physical in-centre or online via zoom.
