Ad hoc tuition seems quite popular

I’ve been quite surprised by the response to my offer of ad hoc tuition for math and physics. This is the first year I’m allowing it and I had expected, the bulk of the calls were from parents of students in the integrated programme.

There may be a few reasons for this. First, IP students may be too busy to commit to regular weekly tuition. Second, they can’t fit in anywhere else as most learning centres only cater to mainstream students. Finally, IP students are generally academically bright and only need coaching in certain topics.

The IP students so far who have made multiple bookings to consult me are from NJC, HCI, NYGH and RGS. I did ask them or their parents on what they look out for when choosing a tutor: (1) travelling distance, (2) experience in teaching IP students, (3) ability to teach at JC level, (4) reasonable fees.

The non-IP students who have booked multiple slots tend to be those who did very badly in their recent MYEs and their parents wish them to revise all their fundamentals. That, I must say, is a wise decision, especially for sec 1 or sec 2 students who have done badly in their math exams.

If you need to consult me about IP tuition for Math, Physics or Chemistry, pls contact me @ 97860411. Alternatively, you can contact Mr Pang @ 90065997.

PSLE score of 263 can get you into RI in 2014

Just received news that my wife’s young cousin got a place in RI with a PSLE score of 263. I’ not sure if that is RI’s cut-off point for this year though.

Anyway, getting into a “top” secondary school is just the beginning, and has little bearing on one’s actual performance as the rules of the game have changed, drastically. For example, for Nov and Dec this year, I’ve been tutoring a handful of year 2, 3 and 4 students from Integrated Programme schools such as RI, NJC and RVHS who have either not been promoted to their next level, or have failed terribly at their end-of-year exams.

Integrated Programme (IP) Math

IP students always give me headaches because they come from different schools and have their own syllabi, to the point I’ve kind of decided not to take in any IP students anymore. I’ve taught students from RV, ACS(I), NJC, RI, RGS, HCI and NYGS.

But now I’m in a dilemma, because my existing IP students are asking me to continue guiding them. Two YR4 RI boys and a YR4 RGS girl (plus her friend) are asking me to have a headstart programme in Nov/Dec to intro them to H2 Math. A YR2 NYGH student is asking me to do the same for her YR3 Math. The problem is, they may not all fit into the same session because of differences in availability and level.

If I were to proceed, it would be 2-hr sessions, lecture cum discussion style, and if they are spread out across several sessions in the same week, I would need a few more students to join us to avoid boring and expensive one-to-one tuition. So if you are an IP student and in the same level (preferably even same school) as them in 2013 (YR5 or YR3) and you need a headstart in Math, please consider joining us. You may contact me at 97860411. Thank you.

Integrated Programme (IP) students taking O-levels as private candidates …

Yes, as a professional teacher and tutor, I would encourage it. For two good reasons: (1) to have an internationally recognised secondary education certificate (at least a certificate beyond the PSLE; else it can be quite embarrassing), (2) to learn to prepare for a highly pressurizing major written examination.

Since IP students are not allowed to sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level exam (the logic of which I still do not understand), they can sit for the IGCSE exam administered by the British Council.

The IGCSE syllabus is almost the same as Singapore’s GCE O-level exam’s before 2007. In fact, it is academically less rigorous than today’s GCE O-Level although the topics covered are wider. I’ve taught both IGCSE Math and Physics as a relief teacher at UWCSEA and found them to be very manageable for students. In fact, IP students should be scoring A’s for all the IGCSE subjects if they put in enough effort in their studying.

If you need further clarification, do give me a call or sms to 97860411. Btw, I’m Ilyasa, Principal Tutor at Singapore Learner. I’m busy teaching or tutoring most of the time, so I’m sorry if I’m not able to pick up your call at times or reply promptly to your sms.

Not all Integrated Programme (IP) students make it …

I’m sure many of you have read the Straits Times article (22 Dec 2011) which stated that about 5% of every cohort of IP students fail to get into local universities. In fact, around 5% of IP students leave the programme before graduation. Thus if you are an IP student, please don’t take your studies lightly. You still have to work hard and study smartly like everyone else.

Good luck!

Best Regards,

Ilyasa, M.Ed., PGDE, B.Sc., full-time tutor of Math & Physics (h/p: 97860411)

A former MOE school teacher, Mr Ilyasa has been coaching students in ‘A’ Level (H2/H1) Physics and (H2/H1) Mathematics for more than 6 years, as well as ‘O’ Level Physics, Additional Math, Math and PSLE Math for more than 10 years. Sec 4 IP Math class starts today …..

Just finished teaching the basics of Differentiation (chain, product & quotient rule) to two post-sec 3 IP students this morning. They are from RI and RGS. If you wish to join us, give me a call at 97860411.

Tuition is not just for weak students. Sometimes, you just wanna get ahead of your peers. Headstart classes also make it easier for you to learn in school later.
