Does anyone really need tuition during the Nov-Dec school hols?

The answer depends on your current needs (to end the year with confidence) and your aims for the upcoming year (to excel in your studies or in a super important exam such as the O or A levels).

Which of the following categories are you in?

(A) You Did Very Badly In Your Recent End-of-Year Exams.

If your poor performance was in Math (S1-S3), A.Math (S3), Physics (S3) or Chemistry (S3), then you MUST utilise your Nov-Dec school hols to catch-up on those topics that you had problems understanding, by re-learning and re-doing those topics.

In this case, we recommend 1-1 tuition, at least twice a week for each subject of concern, to cover and master all your weak topics. You may even want to sign up for a mock exam in January to gauge your improvement.

(B) You Scored C5-B3 In Your Recent End-of-Year Exams.

If you had obtained these grades for Math (S1-S3), A.Math (S3), Physics (S3) or Chemistry (S3), chances are it will be quiet difficult for you to get distinctions for these subjects next year.

Thus you need to utilise your Nov-Dec school hols to redo those topics that you had problems understanding deeply, by re-learning the difficult concepts and solving challenging questions.

In such a case, we recommend 1-1 tuition, at least once a week for each subject of concern, to cover and master all your weaker sub-topics. You may also opt for group tuition (form own group or join a differentiated learning group).

(C) You Scored A2-A1 In Your Recent End-of-Year Exams.

If you had obtained distinctions for Math (S1-S3), A.Math (S3), Physics (S3) or Chemistry (S3), then you are in a good position to maintain your lead in these subjects (remember that exams are actually competitions).

Hence you may use your Nov-Dec school hols to learn ahead some key topics, by attending Head Start courses.

(D) Even though you did some science practicals in Sec 3, you are still not confident of doing well in practicals, which is necessary if you are aiming for a distinction in your science subject.

Because of the hectic pace of Sec 4 (or Sec 5) life, your final year in secondary school is not a good time to play catch-up for your science practicals. Furthermore, your school science labs will close some time in July in preparation for your prelim practicals as well as your actual O-level practicals. And unlike theory lessons, you will not get to practise practicals no matter how badly you did in your prelims.

Thus if you are not confident of doing your practicals correctly and finishing it in time, we recommend that you sign up for our practical lessons in the Nov-Feb period, before your theory lessons become heavy again. Remember, the practical constitutes 20% (or 15% for combined science) of your total marks for your science subject (scroll to the bottom of this page for more info on our science practical service).

From 12 Oct 2026 to 20 Oct 2026, our top math and science tutors will be avaiable to give you revision lessons in Math, A.Math, Physics, Chemistry or Combined Science, either for standalone topics, or in the format of a Crash Course, either as 1-1 lessons or in groups that you form yourself with friends.

Ms Tang: Ms Tang graduated from NTU with a B.Eng in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She has been teaching students in Math, Science, Biology and Chemistry since 2009. An effective and caring tutor, she uses analogies and diagrams to explain and classify things for easier memorization; identifying and correcting students’ misconceptions and assumptions, understanding what students are confused about, and helping them to see where they have gone wrong. Ms Tang has helped many students achieve their desired results.

Mr Ilyas:  An NIE-trained Teacher, Mr Ilyas has been coaching students in O-Level & IP Chemistry, Physics and Math for more than 12 years. An alumnus of Raffles Institution, Mr Ilyas holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the NUS as well as a Master of Education (Curriculum & Teaching) degree from the National Institute of Education. Mr Ilyas’ thinking and metacognitive approaches to problem solving has helped many students of varying abilities to excel in Math and the Sciences. He has coached students from many different schools and streams, including IP, SAP, and IB.

Duration: usually 1.5h or 2h (but it can be 3h to 6h for crash courses)

(C) Supervised Self-Directed Learning (SSDL) (in-centre, ad hoc or regular)

Features: Students study at their own pace, high availability of make-up lessons.

Purpose: Revision | Self-study | Consultation

Subjects offered: S1 to S4 Math, Chemistry, Physics

Duration: usually 1.5h or 2h

Days & Times: Weekday evenings, Weekend mornings, Weekend evenings (to be negotiated)

Fees: $35 per hr per student.

FAQ

(1) What is the main difference between 1-1 tuition, group tuition and SSDL?

In 1-1 tuition, the student is not sharing the room and tutor with anyone else so the student gets maximum attention. In group tuition, the students in the group will all learn the same topic and will try to solve problems at the same pace. In supervised self-directed learning (SSDL), the student has the subject and pace flexibility of a 1-1 student but is sharing the room and the tutor with other students who may be doing a different topic or subject. SSDL is only for students whose primary learning mode is via reading and doing. If the student needs lots of verbal teaching and demonstrations and tutor-prompting, then the student needs to opt for 1-1 tuition or form a group with similar students.

How Do We Conduct Our Lessons For 1-1 and Group Tuition?

Features of our Coaching sessions for Effective Teaching and Learning:

  1. Before the lesson, students submit to us the questions or concepts they would like us to help solve or answer or clarify, or at least tell us the sub-topic they would like us to cover, either starting from zero knowledge or to explain difficult concepts or solve higher-order problems.
  2. If no questions or topics submitted, then we will have a head start lesson on a new topic, or a revision on earlier topics that are scheduled for an upcoming assessment.
  3. Lessons are interactive, and students are expected to ask questions whenever they have doubts and need clarification. If the student is too quiet, the tutor will ask questions to check understanding.
  4. Usually, by the end of the first lesson, we are able to tell whether the student learns better via listening or reading and we will adjust our lesson delivery. If it is the former, we will talk and demonstrate more, and if it is the latter, we will give notes and examples to read. Both will be asked to solve problems in class, and answers will be discussed soon after.
