Education hours: Depending on availability, you can choose to attend classes in the mornings, afternoons or evenings: 10.45 am – 12.45 pm, 1.45 pm – 3.45 pm, 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm (Not all these sessions will be utilized in a single day).
Education calendar: In terms of weeks, terms, months and semester of study as well as no-lesson days, SLA generally follows the same academic calendar as those of government secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore, so that families and staff with children in public secondary schools can better align their social activities. However, graduating students may be asked to attend extra lessons or take internal examinations in the June holidays.
Registration:
Registration is now open for the 2019 intake. Classes will officially commence on Monday 4 Feb 2019. However, students who are taking the A-Levels for the first time are required to start classes in the first week of Jan 2019. FAQ
FAQ1: If I’m a private candidate re-taking the A-Levels, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?
You only need to do GP and 3 H2 subjects. Total 4 subjects. You don’t need to redo your H1 content subject or PW or MT.
FAQ2: If I’m a private candidate doing the A-Levels for the first time, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?
You’ll need to do 3 H2 subjects, 1 H1 content subject, GP and MT. Total 6 subjects.
FAQ3: If I’m a private candidate, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into an overseas university like in the UK or Australia?
Most overseas universities accept just 3 H2 subjects. Even GP is not needed. However some universities may expect a fourth subject, which can be a H1 or H2 subject, but it is safer to take a H2 subject.
First-timer A-Levels for Private Candidates
We provide A-Level / H2 and O-Level Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Science (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) Practical Training for private / school candidates and homeschoolers, for both local (eg. H2, Singapore-Cambridge) and international exams (CIE, IGCSE).
Note: Our practical fees are lowest for practicals done in the Jan-Mar period. So sign up now!
You may need science practical lessons if you are a private candidate who needs a science lab and apparatus as well as practical coaching, or you are a school candidate who needs more practical training to get top grades.
School candidates (in govt sec schools, IP schools and JCs) who need more FULL PRACTICAL PRACTICE are also welcome, as you seldom get to complete a full practical in school (1.5 hrs for Combined Science practical exam, 1hr 50 min for Pure Science practicals, and 2hr 30 min for H2 practicals), mainly due to lack of curriculum time.
If you are a private school or tutor who needs a science lab or practical training for your students, you are also advised to contact us early to work out the details such as course curriculum, lab worksheets, scheduling and fee matters.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES
The registration for ‘A’ and ‘O’ Level exams as a private candidate usually opens around mid-April (Please check SEAB website) and closes before mid-May. If you are registering for a Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Combined Sciences), at the time of registration, you will be asked whether you have done any science practical training in any school, centre, or institute. Thus you must begin your science practical training before April. Science practical training in Singapore Learner qualifies as practical training for the purpose of registration for Science subjects for the ‘A’ and ‘O’ level exams.
Thus if you are considering Singapore Learner as your science practical training provider, you must register with us and complete at least 4 basic practical sessions for each subject by 31st April for us to certify that you have attended science practical training. As students usually do about 10 practical sessions per subject to be competent in practicals, the rest of the lab sessions can be done from May to early October, including the prelim/mock practical exams.

GENERAL PAPER JUNE HOLIDAYS PROGRAMME
General Paper Programme Outline
This is an intensive system designed to equip you with the essential tools needed.
Duration: 3 sessions (3hours each)
Course Levels available:
-
A) FOUNDATION BUILDING SYSTEM (suitable for students with grades below C)
-
B) FINE-TUNING SYSTEM (suitable for students with grades C and above. This course will skip fundamental work and zero-in on precision writing techniques)
*note: Course fees are identical for both programmes. Choose the one that best suits your immediate needs and circumstances.
—————————————————————————————————-
Overview of primary Components:
1) Essay writing techniques- Question choice & analysis, essay structures, formulating arguments, conveying ideas in effective writing- there are essays, and then there are exam-essays.
2) Comprehension skills- critical reading, question analysis, effective paraphrasing and AQ-mastery. Work-arounds and preparation before we even start reading the text is key!
3) Content- Cut down on the need to memorize tons of facts and statistics. Solutions to content-generating that will save you hours each day!
———————————————————————————————————–
Workshop structure:
Session 1: Essay writing
Dates: (Course A- May 30th/June 13th, Course B: June 6/21st )
From planning to execution. Using time effectively to maximise the quality of your essay: a step-by-step guide on how to tackle any question in Paper 1. Materials include a 101-essential checklist for every student, sample essays/paragraphs, discussion of examination questions to cover a broad range of topics/areas of focus.
Session 2: Comprehension
Dates: (Course A: May 31st/June 14th, Course B: June 7th/22nd )
Critical reading and prepping effectively to ensure the most coverage of the passage, as well as systematic addressing of the various question types. Paraphrasing techniques and practices will also be the focus as this skill is of core importance to this paper, and one many students overlook. Finally, deciphering the AQ- how to maximise marks in a time-pressured window. Materials will include a handout covering various question types, sample/excerpts from a wide range of JC examination papers, as well as sample AQs from past year Cambridge papers.
Session 3: Content
Dates: (Course A: June 1st/15th, Course B: June 8th/23rd)
General knowledge is key to scoring well. But often times, it is not the volume, but rather the quality, and application. Content-manipulation/generation can often dramatically cut back on hours spent memorising facts and stats for the mere sake of doing so. Students will be shown, through a variety of methodologies (mind-maps, issue-linking, thinking structures etc) how to prepare for the subject efficiently. Realising that topics/modules should never be approached as separate entities also falls in-line with the changing trends of GP questions set by Cambridge, where essay questions are often multi-faceted.

Course take-homes:
LET’S MAKE THINKING FUN AGAIN
Appreciation of GP beyond just a subject, but rather gaining a set of skills that can be applied throughout various aspects of life and academia. Debunking myths such as “the more I know, the better I’ll do”, and finally, re-discovering the passion for learning over the need for studying.
Attendees of the workshop will also gain unlimited access to my web-blog, which houses a repository of articles, sample essays/AQ responses, as well as revision essentials.

About the tutor:
Mr Shermann is a graduate from NUS, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and History. He has 9 years of teaching experience in various Junior Colleges implementing his GP programmes, and over a decade of experience in private coaching. He specialises in General Paper and English Language, and has been credited with creating unique and functional approaches to effective writing. A fun and interactive teacher, sessions with Mr Shermann promise to be eye-opening and productive. Let’s get those grades you deserve, and let’s make learning fun again!

Alternative to private schooling for Sec 1 to Sec 4
For students who wish to prepare for the O-Level or IGCSE exams as private candidates, we welcome you to join the Singapore Learner Academy (SLA), which is an academic division in Singapore Learner which aims to prepare private candidates for national certificate examinations.
How is SLA different from other “private schools”?
SLA is not a full-time “school” as it only has at most 4.5 hrs of lessons a day for 4 days in a week, Monday-Thursday.
SLA does not have Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) such as sports and camps. However, over time, special interest and hobby groups may be formed and enrichment activities may be conducted in the afternoons.
SLA takes in students from Sec 1 level (13-yr-olds) to Sec 4 level (16-yr-olds).
Instead of classroom settings, SLA uses the Assisted Self-Directed Learning (ASDL) model, where students explore and study academic subjects by themselves with the help of teachers and good educational tools, materials and resources.
To read more about SLA, please click here: PRIVATE CANDIDATES.

It doesn’t really matter which JC you are posted to.
I know many students and their parents don’t like to hear this (the same way some people don’t like it when I said that being in an IP school doesn’t guarantee academic success). BUT IT IS TRUE.
All JCs have qualified teachers and good facilities. What will prevent you from getting good A-level results is your attitude towards your studies, your teachers and your school. For some strange reason, there are students from “branded” schools who just cannot get over being posted to a “neighbourhood” JC.
Whether you are in the “top” or “bottom” JC you will still end up doing the SAME A-level exams. And four As at the A-levels is computed the same way by universities for the purpose of admission, after taking into account subject prerequisites, NOT the JC you come from. Also, no point judging the teaching quality of a JC by the percentage of its students who make it to university. Obviously a JC which takes in only top students will generally have better A-Level results. So it largely depends on the students. Some “unbranded” JCs may have outstanding and caring teachers who add value to students; they take in weaker students and yet are able to coach them to get good A-level results.
Rather than appealing your posting, or moaning or sulking about your JC posting, you are better off hitting the books straightaway as your A-levels is about just 84 weeks away and your crucial Promos less than half of that. You know, teenagers can waste away 80 weeks quite easily.
However, appealing may be necessary if you have a physical or medical condition and it may be understandable too if the school you are posted to is very far from home. And if you are enrolled in a Poly course that you don’t want, then your posting DOES matter as poly courses are narrower in scope and you don’t want those industry-specific tasks to dominate your life for the next three years.
JC courses are broader, dealing with centuries-old themes such as the humanities, the languages and the sciences. This means to succeed in a JC, you’d also need to employ a centuries-old technique – READ. And read a lot you must, and think about what you have read, and think about the ways you think.
Every year, about 1000 JC1 students don’t get promoted to JC2. Thus you might want to seriously consider studying right away.
