We understand that Economics is a challenging subject, and in the current climate, it is no longer sufficient to rely on rote learning, regurgitating of content and memorising model essays/case studies. Questions in school exams and A-level are testing students on their inference and higher order thinking skills.

Common misconceptions or pitfalls:
1. Just memorize and hope for the best by rewriting the notes, without studying smarter

2. Write more, the more the better, without focusing on proper evaluation techniques

3. Study everything instead of focusing on certain key areas

4. Study last minute and think that time is on your side

5. Study the content instead of studying how the question is designed and the hints behind each keyword

Classes are designed to be small (around 5 pax) in order to facilitate discussion and allow the tutor to focus on the strengths and weaknesses of each individual students. If you are having trouble with economics, not satisfied with your grades despite your best efforts, writing a lot but not doing well, or want to secure an A both in School and in the A-level, sign up for class with us today.

FAQ Section from Mr Teh:

Q: Does the tutor have his own notes/tutorial/new and updated case study examples, i.e. when there is a new budget or policy released in Singapore, will he use it as class material?
A: Definitely. We understand that one of the criteria in the evaluation component of Economics paper, requires candidates awareness of real world context. Besides using our own teaching material that builds out students evaluative skills, current events are also discussed regularly in class, before scaffolding these discussions and apply them to meet exam requirements.

Q: How is the structure of the lesson i.e. How much time dedicated to lecture vs class work?

A: About 40percent is allocated for content, whereas the rest are focused on applications. We understand our role, and that we are a complement to school’s programme. Thus, whenever there is a lack of practice in particular area (for example, understanding the question requirements and how to analyse adequately), we focus on these areas to maximise the gains for our students. Thus, every class can be different, as the tutor will adjust accordingly to the issues of each class.

Q: Will there be homework issued like essays and case study questions and will the tutor mark the work?
A: There is homework, but these is also discussed with the students as we understand the rigour they might be facing in schools. Every piece of homework given is marked and reviewed with the student.

Q: Will there be time dedicated to class discussion for case studies and essays?
A: Yes. As we focused more on the applications aspect, and we come to understand that this aspect is not regularly practiced in school, we see it as a crucial opportunity for us to practise this skill with our students.

Q: How do you plan to separate the H1/H2 students?
A: yes, they are always separated into different classes, and they should, as their examination and skillsets required are different.

Q: Some schools have different syllabus, e.g. some start on macro in J1 instead of micro(HCI, NYJC, VJC), do you separate classes based on syllabus?

A: They are being taken into consideration when we planned for classes. Thus, we always seek to work with students, and not making things more difficult for them.

Q: Are there online classes and do you have plans to do a pure online class or a hybrid class i.e. some online some physical

A: Most of the students currently prefer to have lessons in person, as there are certain skills that require them to practice on the spot. However, we also have students whom prefer online lessons and we also do make arrangements for that. In fact, hybrid classes were already a regular part of our lessons since Circuit Breaker ended.

Q: We prefer online classes as we live further away, can you walk us through what a typical online class will be like?

A:  A link to the online classroom will be sent to either you or your child’s Whatsapp account a few minutes before the start of the class. Materials used for the class will be sent to you in a PDF or word format by email at least a day before the class itself. Parents are welcome to come down physically and collect printed materials if they wish. Online class has the same class size limit as physical class. Once attendance is taken and the tutor is sure that all students are accounted for, the class begins just like any regular class. Lesson materials are projected onto the screen in the online classroom, and there is a whiteboard function which the tutors will use to write, and presentation function for Power point slides. Classwork is expected to be submitted to the tutor via camscanner in PDF format, and the marked work will be returned to them in PDF format. For students who are more shy in nature, they may choose to private message the tutor to address their concerns during class. The experience will be the same as a physical class but in the comfort of your home.

Q: Before an exam, will the tutor go through all the concepts tested and give a review/prediction
A: Yes definitely. A full review and spotting trends for school papers and A-level is always necessary a few days before the exam.

Which subject combination to choose in JC?

SCIENCE PRACTICAL TRAINING

H2 PHYSICS PRACTICAL

H2 CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL

H2 BIOLOGY PRACTICAL

This is another important question and how you decide may affect your career.

My informed opinion is as follows:

(a) If you are passionate about or highly interested in something, say, History, then include it as one of your H2 subjects.

(b) Include Economics as one of your subjects, whether at H1 or H2 level. It will give you a macro and micro view of the financial workings of society. Economics is also a first-year module in almost all professional courses in universities. However, it is not easy to score in Econs because like GP, it is a subject meant for mature minds and students who can express themselves clearly and logically in essays.

(c) Include Math as one of your subjects, whether at H1 or H2 level. It trains you to be precise and accurate while thinking logically. A pass or a good grade in Math is also included in the admission criteria of many courses in universities.

(d) If you are still unsure, then take the following combination if you meet the minimum criteria and your JC provides it: H2: Physics, Chemistry, Math; H1: Econs. It is the most versatile combination, allowing you to enter any course in the local universities, including Medicine, Law, Engineering and Accountancy. If you don’t intend to be an Engineer, then drop Physics and make Econs your H2 subject.

(e) If you want a Singapore government scholarship, remember to take all four subjects at H2 level. To get a scholarship, you have to be consistent in your work and performance.

(f) If you intent to study Medicine overseas, it may be necessary to do Biology as some universities still insist on it.

(g) Before you select a combination, it is important that you know what course you wish to do at the university that you want. Visit the website of the university, read the course prospectus and identify the minimum criteria for admission. Refer to my “Uni Links” to check out the subject requirements for the different universities. For SUTD, they do not have specific course pre-requisites, but students are encouraged to have a Mathematics and a Science subject at the H2 or equivalent level.

(h) If you intent to do undergrad studies in the US, you also need to prepare for and do well in the SAT test.

(i) If you intend to do Medicine or Law in Singapore, please immerse
yourself in medicine or law-related volunteer work during your holidays and be sincere about service. Entry into Medicine and Law requires passing an interview. You need to have knowledge beyond your A-Level subjects to convince the interviewers that you are a worthy candidate.

Students who are unaware of many of the above points often end up in a university doing a course they do not want. Good luck.

Rgds,

Ilyasa

Recommended Books for ‘A’ Level Physics & Math

MOCK EXAMS FOR SCIENCE PRACTICAL

JC Math

For students to master each topic in JC Math, I would recommend the following series of books:

1. Power Maths H1 & H2

Publisher: Tavern learning Centre; Author: P K Lim

It comes in four Volumes. Volume 1 provides notes and examples for Sequences & Series, Functions & Graphs and Calculus. Volume 2 provides notes and examples for Vectors, Complex Numbers and Statistics. Volumes 3 and 4 provide a variety of difficult questions and worked solutions for all six topics.

How to use these books?

Use Volumes 1 and 2 to learn the theories of each topic and analyse the examples to understand and remember how different types of problems are solved.

Use Volumes 3 and 4 to either learn new techniques (if you don’t have much time left to study for exams) or to do self-practice. For the latter, cover the solutions when you attempt to answer the questions and after that mark your own solutions by comparing them with the model answers. If your answers are incorrect, seek to understand where, how and why you got them wrong.

If you often find yourself not understanding some parts of the model answers, then, yes, you’d probably need to consult a tutor. But you can first try asking your school teachers or friends first.

 JC Physics

For students to master each topic in JC Physics, I would recommend the following series of books:

1. Sears & Zemansky’s College Physics

Publisher: Pearson International Edition; Authors: Hugh D. Young, Robert M. Geller

This is a comprehensive reference book for A-level Physics. It is very informative but some of the worked examples are difficult to understand. But it is a must-have book for those of you who are very passionate about physics.

2. College Physics

Publisher: Brooks/Cole Cengage Learning; Author: Vuille, Serway

This book has worked examples that are easier to understand. It is also written in a simpler style which makes learning easier. A good reference book for JC Physics students to have.

3. Physics A Level Complete Yearly Solutions

Publisher: Themis Publishing; Authors: Thomas Bond, Chris Hughes

This book is good because of the examiners’ reports included in it. Students should read the examiners’ comments to know what is expected of them in answering A-Level Physics questions.

4. GCE ‘A’ Level Physics (Worked Solutions)(Classified Topic by Topic)

Publisher: Dyna Publisher Pte Ltd; Author: Phang Yu Hon

The answers to past A-Level questions provided in this book is generally better than those in other books; more comprehensive and more accurate. It is also excellent for providing answers to selected H3 Physics questions.

5. Physics A Level Challenging Drill Questions for H1. H2 (questions from top JCs)

Publisher: Cosmic Services; Authors: Thomas Bond, Chris Hughes

If students complete most of the questions in this book and mark their answers using the separate answer book, they will almost certainly get an ‘A’ for their A-level Physics.

6. Longman Advanced Level Physics

Publisher: Pearson Longman South Asia Pte Ltd; Author: Loo Kwok Wai

This book is actually a collection of A-Level Physics notes. It is good for beginning to intermediate level physics students as its many worked examples are gradual and easy to understand. Ideal for quick revision. Not comprehensive enough to be used as a reference text.
