Nowadays, it may be important to do O-Level Physics

This is because amongst the easiest courses to qualify for in universities in Singapore nowadays is Engineering, even with A-level grades such as CCD. However, all engineering courses require at least a pass in O-level Physics. Thus it is unwise not to do O-level Physics. Some recent A-level grads have found out that that their poor grades qualify for only engineering courses, but they didn’t take Physics at either O or A level, thus finding themselves unable to proceed.

Some secondary schools emphasize doing Chemistry, instead of Physics, with the reason that Chemistry is a pre-requisite for Medicine or the Life Sciences, but they forget that the eventual A-level grades of most students will qualify them for Engineering but not Medicine or Dentistry.

The benefit of repeating

I’m sure it’s a terrible feeling to be asked to repeat an academic year instead of being promoted to the next level. Some students never fully recover from the esteem-destroying  act of having to stay behind while their friends advance.

Thus, when two repeat students (they already knew their fate) approached me at the end of last year, I took a sensitive approach to handling them as their morale was very, very low. One (boy) had to repeat Sec 4 (IP) and the other (girl) had to repeat Sec 3.

I coached them for most of December and intensively in Jan and Feb, and their results have been very encouraging. At this time last year both had failed their first math tests, but this time round, the boy had topped his class overall in math (taking into account 2 tests) and the girl had scored A1 in one test and a good pass in another.

I’m very proud of them that they have been able to put their past behind them and move on, successfully. We cannot change our past, but we can certainly influence our future. No time is a good time to give up on doing something that is good. Don’t give up learning and working hard towards a noble goal.

Ilyasa

Some students really make me proud

Just received the good news that my ex-tutee Shawn Lim, the first needy student under our free tuition scheme, has received a scholarship from the ITE for his outstanding N Level results.

I still remember the day when Shawn first arrived. He stood at my door smiling and I made a guess that that was the student my series of email exchanges with a social worker and a lady (his aunt) was referring to. He smiled while even talking to me, such that I couldn’t guess his life story, so I was almost moved to tears (guys don’t cry right?) when I learnt that he lost both his parents while in primary school, and for a few years after that his life was a mess; living alone at times, missing school many times due to not being able to wake up on time, not having enough money and food at times etc. Just listening to him for 20 minutes made me realise that I’ve not suffered at all in life. In fact, by the time his stint at my place ended, he has taught me more than I could ever teach him.

Many students out there complain about their parents, their school, their teachers, their friends and so on. Some are not even happy that they are posted to a good school; they want a brand-name school. I think such students should spend just a few minutes with people like Shawn to learn a thing or two about life.

Shawn is not the first student to have made me proud, nor will he be the last.

Some news about jc postings and cut-off points 2014

I’m happy that most of my ex-S4s have obtained places in the courses they want. One even got a scholarship to do a poly course, upon my advice, instead of going to a JC. Of those who opt to go to JCs, most are in either PJC, AJC, JJC, ACJC, NJC, AJC, YJC or HCI.

From them and some JC teachers, it seems that the Science stream cut-off point (COP) for some JCs is as follows:

PJC: 14, AJC: 8, JJC: 14/15/16 (nobody seems to be sure), ACJC: 5 (really?), NJC: 5 or 6, HCI: should still be 3, YJC: 18.

PJC and JJC are always trying to outrank each other, and I believe this time PJC emerges the winner. The problem about PJC is I think it’s name. “Pioneer” is not associated with anything prestigious in Spore. I think if it had been named Sheares Junior College or even Bukit Panjang JC it would stand a better chance of tightening its COP.

Similarly, I think ACJC, CJC, SAJC and AJC are popular choices partly because of their fanciful names. Imagine ACJC is renamed Dover JC or AJC is renamed AMK JC; I think they will lose a lot of potential applicants. So even if every JC is a good JC, not every JC has a good name.

Please remember that even if you have been posted to a less popular JC, you still stand a good chance to get four or three H2 grade As at the A-levels. So quickly settle down and start studying for your Promo exams. Yes, I’m serious; you may ignore my advice at your own risk.

Rgds,

Ilyasa

LATEST:  I think PJC has outranked JJC this year, because I have a new J1 tutee who scored 14 points but could not get into PJC and instead was given JJC. Also heard from a new J1 tutee that quite a number of her schoolmates in AJC are appealing to enter NYJC. This may mean that in terms of COP, NYJC has outranked AJC again.
