Tough IP Maths Question: Simultaneous Equations with “Hence” Keyword

Source: NJC 2015 Junior High 3 MA301 YEA Q4, sent by one of my Y3 students

A good example of a simultaneous equation question that teaches important skills which are used in Y5/Y6 or Senior High.

In part ii, the keyword hence is used. Most students stumble at this question as they try to solve part ii by redo-ing the simultaneous equation. Part i is generally solvable by most IP students.

The trick here is to use the solutions for x and y that you have given in part i. Looking at part ii, 9(a+1)^2 + 4b^2 = 18 looks almost exactly like the equation given in part i. You can safely conclude that you should substitute x=a+1 and y=2b as they expand with square to give you the same equation you have in part ii. Sub x=a+1 and y=2b into the other equation in part ii, and do some simple expansion to manipulate it to look like 2x + y = 5. Afterwords, sub x=a+1 and y=2b into the solutions of part i, and you have your answer.

I hope this has been helpful to your revision, and good luck for your exams

Importance of JC tuition

It is quite tragic that most parents and even students think that the PSLE is the most important exam in Singapore, to the point that parents are willing to spend a lot on tuition for their 12-year old kids but not for their 17-18 year olds, who they believe can understand everything they study on their own. This is quite far from the truth. JC students still need good teachers, failing which they will need good tutors.

Doing badly at the A-levels has quite financially serious consequences. Let’s do the math. Let’s say a student is weak in three H2 subjects and goes for private tuition from March of his 1st year to November of his 2nd year. That is a total of 21 months. At roughly $320 per subject per month, his parents would have to fork out a total of $320 x 3 x 21 = $20 160. So we can say on average JC tuition costs around 20K. But if he doesn’t go for tuition and end up being rejected for his desired courses by all our local recognised universities, his parents may have to fork out around 300K-500K for an overseas degree! That is about 15 to 25 times more costly than spending on JC tuition.

My advice to parents is, if your child is struggling with his JC subjects, you NEED to find him good tutors. If you want to save 20K now you may have to lose 400K later.

PSLE Science question of the week

PSLE Science question of the week #1:
Banana Tree
Unripe bananas are green and contain chlorophyll.
Question: Bananas curve upwards when growing. Suggest a reason why bananas grow upwards.
Option A: They grow upwards to counteract the force of gravity
Option B: They grow upwards so that animals cannot reach and eat them before they are ripe
Option C: They grow upwards towards the sun so they can photosynthesize
Option D: They grow upwards so that they can get more carbon dioxide

Answer: Answer is C, plants always grow towards the sun in order to capture more sunlight for photosynthesis.

PSLE Science question of the week #2:

Athlete’s foot

Question: Student A has a medical condition in which fungus grows on his feet. The doctor advised student A to wear slippers instead of covered shoes. Explain how wearing slippers helps reduce the growth of fungus on the feet.

Option A: Wearing slippers allows the student to air his feet and prevent growth of fungus

Option B: Wearing slippers keeps the student’s feet dry, as fungus needs water to grow

Option C: Wearing slippers instead of shoes as fungus likes to grow on socks

Option D: Wearing slippers exposes the feet to the sun, and fungi do not like sunlight

Answer: Answer is B! Fungi needs water to grow, so it prefers damp environment. Wearing slippers allowed sweat to evaporate, keeping the feet dry and free of fungi.

PSLE Science question of the week #3

Question: A man used a hammer to drive a nail into a piece of wood. Which factor will NOT affect how deep the nail goes into the wood?

Option A: Mass of the man

Option B: Mass of the nail

Option C: Friction between the nail and the wood

Option D: Height at which the hammer was raised

Post your answer in the comments section below!

Answer: Answer is B, mass of the nail is unrelated to the amount of force or energy the man needs to hit the nail.

PSLE Science question of the week #4

When Student A closed the switch, the bulb blew. Which one of the following would have prevented the bulb from blowing?

Option A: Using fewer batteries

Option B: Closing the switch more quickly

Option C: Changing the direction of the switch

Option D: Changing the direction of all batteries

Answer: Answer is A! Using too many batteries can cause the bulb to fuse due to too much current flowing through the bulb, and heating up the filament.

SEC 3 COMBINED SCIENCE (BUKIT BATOK)

We have 2 modes of regular weekly tuition for our Math and Science classes (non-IP): Flexible Group Tuition and 1-1 Tuition.

FLEXIBLE GROUP TUITION (FGT)

We do not have a fixed group tuition slot for secondary school students for three important reasons: (1) secondary students tend to have all sorts of after-school activities and even weekend school activities such that they will keep asking for change of tuition timing and many make-up lessons, thus if we accommodate this it will become flexible group tuition anyway; (2) secondary students have several math and science subjects and either multiple tuition will be too expensive for them or they will ask both math and science questions during tuition time as our kind and caring tutors can teach both math and science subjects; (3) different schools proceed with the same subject at a different pace and even with a different order of topics thus many secondary students will find tuition lessons are not relevant to them if we dedicate a specific topic of a particular subject to a tuition slot.

So in Flexible Group Tuition, a one-session-per-week student can attend any ONE of the designated slots and times and can consult the tutor on any math or science topic. The student is still advised to stick to one slot where possible for ease of administration. The schedule and structure of FGT is as follows:

Days: Mon, Tue, Fri, Sat, Sun

Times: 5.30pm – 7pm

Structure: Once a week, 4 times a month (however, a student may opt for the twice-a-week scheme with a higher but discounted monthly fee)

Registration fee: $30

Monthly fee (4 sessions, start in Nov-Jan): $280 (once-a-week) | $480 (twice-a-week)

Monthly fee (4 sessions, start in Feb-Oct): $320 (once-a-week) | $560 (twice-a-week)

Note: Above fees for new students may be changed without notice. In general, our fees are lowest for those who commence tuition in Nov-Jan and will increase after that (for new students).

1-1 TUITION

Days: To be negotiated and agreed upon

Times: To be negotiated and agreed upon

Registration fee: $30

For further details, click on INDIVIDUAL TUITION.

Note: Our Science students (who commence tuition before March) enjoy a 50% discount when they book our Science practical sessions (once a month).

A-LEVEL PRIVATE CANDIDATES

FAQ

FAQ1:  If I’m a private candidate re-taking the A-Levels, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?

You only need to do GP and 3 H2 subjects. Total 4 subjects. You don’t need to redo your H1 content subject or PW or MT. For candidates who are re-takers, we recommend that you join our regular Jc2 Tuition classes as we will all be focused on preparing for our A-levels that year.

FAQ2:  If I’m a private candidate doing the A-Levels for the first time, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into a local university like NUS or NTU?

You’ll need to do 3 H2 subjects, 1 H1 content subject, GP and MT.  Total 6 subjects.

FAQ3:  If I’m a private candidate, what is the minimum number of subjects I must take to get into an overseas university like in the UK or Australia?

Most overseas universities accept just 3 H2 subjects. Even GP is not needed. However some universities may expect a fourth subject, which can be a H1 or H2 subject, but it is safer to take a H2 subject.
